How to Be Successful in Management

Becoming successful in management does not happen in a day.

Effective management in today’s corporate world takes lots of courage, zeal, knowledge and character. It takes weeks, months for most managers to learn how to manage their subordinates. It is vital to learn the keys to successful management in the corporate world. Knowing and practicing the keys does not guarantee success; it only guarantees that you are able to achieve management goals and make decisions effectively.

Self Discipline

Self-discipline has the ability to make or mar persons occupying management positions. Personal Time Management is a supplementary compliment that aids that capability of a person to maintain the level of self-discipline necessary for successful management. Effective time management leads to elimination wastages, and allows for the allocation of necessary resources appropriate for a scheduled task. To become successful in management, the art of personal time management needs to be learned and practiced on daily basis.

Group Formation & Management

Group formation is the effective way of combining talent, and ideas from persons of diverse mindsets. A group has more likelihood to come up with a better solution compared to just one person. Effective group formation requires that the leader in charge be able to choose like minds with the ability to accomplish set goals or targets. Effective group formation is so important it could decide the future of a manager.

Management also requires that the manager be allocated a set group of individuals. In this case, the manager does not have free-hand in selecting members of his group. Take for example, a C.E.O. Most persons elected in positions similar to that above do not have the ability to fire all subordinates and employ new staff all together.  This is where group management and delegation become important assets of the person occupying management position. Effective group management lays in the ability to build quality into an already existent group. Delegation is a key part of group management. It allows the subordinate to prove himself on a personal level. It also gives the subordinate the ability to free think – make decisions without total input from his superiors.

Project Planning

Successful management requires cooperation from all persons involved. Subordinates need to be briefed adequately on the nature of their targets. Clarity in delivering such targets is important even as provision has to be made for each subordinate to voice his opinions. Good project planning brings forth clarity, reveals any misunderstandings, and eliminates contradictory assumptions. Good project planning actually encourages all involved to think about the details. This collective thinking ensures that all subordinates remain on the same page with the manager.

Written Communication

In corporate context, written communication provides two major functions:
  • Clarification
  • Conveyance of information
Spoken language is not a preferred means of communication in corporate world due to its tendency to not provide clarification or maintain meaning. Sometimes, spoken messages may be conveyed wrongly leading to severe cases of misinterpretation. In today’s corporate world, successful management and effective written communication go hand in hand.
